Love the Florida Keys and thinking about buying your Dream Home but not sure which Key is right for you? You’re not alone—they’re all beautiful. Stretching over 100 miles from the southern tip of Florida, the Keys offer a unique setting with the Gulf on one side of the Overseas Highway and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. So how do you decide which area is the best fit when searching for your home in paradise? It’s not an easy choice. A good place to start is by breaking the Keys into three main sections: the Upper Keys, the Middle Keys, and the Lower Keys. Within these, you’ll find areas like the City of Marathon, located in the Middle Keys, and Key West, the southernmost point of the island chain. So how do you choose? My advice is simple: take the scenic drive all the way down. Stop along the way, explore each area, and start asking yourself a few key questions. Do you want to be closer to Miami—with easy access to shopping, international airports, and mainland conveniences? If so, the Upper Keys may be the right fit. Incredible fishing, and you are now in the Keys and will notice the change from the mainland rush and traffic to the laid back vibe. Or Would you prefer the Middle Keys, where you’re half way down the Keys and still within reach of the mainland and Key West, with the relaxed pace and a family feel. Marathon offers a great balance, with local amenities, activities, and beautiful beaches. Or are you drawn to the peace, quiet, and slower lifestyle of the Lower Keys? More wildlife and Nature, less traffic, less noise, and all about the water. And then there’s Key West—unlike anywhere else. Colorful, vibrant, and full of energy, it truly offers something for everyone. From historic homes in Old Town and the Seaport to the lively nightlife of Duval Street, you’ll find incredible restaurants, boutiques and souvenir shops, live music, and beaches. It’s hard not to fall in love with this one-of-a-kind town. The best part? You don’t have to live in Key West to enjoy it. Many people choose to live a little farther up the Keys, enjoying waterfront living and a quieter lifestyle, while still being just a short drive away from all the excitement. Once you’ve decided which section fits your lifestyle, the next step is narrowing it down further. Each individual key has its own character, separated by bridges and offering something unique. Some areas are better suited for larger boats, while others are perfect for nature lovers. Did you know you can ride horses in the Keys? Certain Keys you sure can! Not just about the water here we do offer some fun things to do on land as well. But if you do love to fish there are certain Keys that are better than others depending on if you prefer back country fishing or deeper water Ocean side. The Gulf Stream is close by and then there is always the ride to the Dry Tortugas…memorable! Importantly you need to know what size canal your boat needs a home for as not only does the depth matter but the canal itself. Are there bridges, is it wide enough, easy in and out, how long does it take, is it flow thru, and more to consider. Certain keys offer specific home styles or building options, some allow ground level with garages and others require elevated and offer outdoor entertainment, parking, and storage underneath. Some Keys have more restaurants and activities, and stores, while others minimal, all in what you need and prefer. Some are ideal for families, with proximity to schools, parks, and activities for kids. Some offer larger lots for more privacy and outdoor space, and others smaller lots with less maintenance. Then there are the Vacation rental rules, a whole different subject and blog! No matter which Key you choose to buy, you’re never far from the rest of the Keys as we are only s total of 100 mile stretch of sheer gorgeousness! In fact, it might be raining on one island and sunny just across the bridge. You can even watch the wall of rain as it moves across the land and ocean which is in itself a sight to see. You can take your boat to a restaurant or to the back country beaches to hang out with your friends instead of driving.
